CHAPTER 19

My heart was racing as I knocked on the wooden door. It opened with a squeak, and I entered.

It was the first time I saw Amara’s room.

A thick mist lingered in the air. I walked on flat grey stone, and I could see the chalk markings of a pentagram. Besides the bed stood a chest of drawers, a wardrobe, and a small table covered with plants, herbs, and candles, and of course, two filled bookshelves stood in front of a wall.

Amara sat on the floor in the middle of the fog, concentrating on a book with Ella and Niam.

My heart almost jumped out of my chest.

I had assumed Amara was alone and that I only had to explain to her the betrayal of the hiding place, and then we would tell the others about it together. But now, all three looked in my direction.

There was no going back.

“Where were you at breakfast today, and who’s that behind you?” Niam asked in surprise, jumped on his legs, and tried to wipe the chalk from his cloak.

“I didn’t expect you all to be here. Well… it’s a funny story… When I wanted to make my way to breakfast, I changed my mind and instead—”

Viera interrupted my trembling voice. “I watched you all disappear into a hole in the greenhouse yesterday, and this morning Cassandra and her handsome friend were trying to sneak back down there.”

I threw my hands into the air and moaned.

Viera had put these sentences down so quickly that I hadn’t even had the chance to object.

What happened to the plan that I would explain the situation? What should I say to make it better?

Amara blinked in disbelief, while Ella smiled kindly. Niam was already on his way in our direction to get a better view of Viera.

“You didn’t show up for breakfast because you secretly met with Rowan?” Ella asked with a grin.

“What makes you think Rowan is the handsome friend?” Niam asked her, and his mouth turned down.

He dropped his shoulders when he saw the scolding look of Ella, who didn’t go further into detail.

I shook my head. “We didn’t sneak around, and I didn’t meet him secretly. I met Rowan in the courtyard as I tried to get some fresh air. Unfortunately, Viera caught us while we were opening the tunnel. I’m so sorry,” I replied, looking at my boots.

“I am Viera!” She waved innocently at the others. I tried to suppress an eye roll. Her timing was something she had to work on.

“Um… I don’t think it will be a problem if another person knows about it. But Viera, promise us not to tell anyone,” Amara said after a long break.

“Viera is a fortune teller,” I burst out.

“How cool is that? You can see the future?” Niam was still making circles around her, who tried to ignore him.

“I’m not a diviner. I’m a soothsayer. Keeping my words to myself is tough, and I can’t lie.”

Silence set in.

That was the moment I had been waiting for, the realization that our secret space would soon be less of a secret if she spilled the beans.
